Enabling C-V2X

C-V2X (cellular vehicle-to-everything) provides a more flexible platform for V2X connectivity as we commercialize HAVs for personal and ride-sharing applications.

5G development and deployment are accelerating, especially in Asia. Field trials are underway, components are coming, and testing covers the spectrum in more ways than one. What are the challenges and how is the ecosystem shaping up? Find out more in this month’s In Focus series.

Eighteen years ago, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reserved the 5.9GHz band for vehicle safety applications—specifically, for Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC), an early variant of Wi-Fi. This unusual step was lauded by the auto industry and safety advocates, who saw this as a step forward for safety even though the technology to enable HAVs was not yet ready.

However, DSRC technology has not and cannot advance technically, resulting in relatively lackluster deployment since the band was reserved for the technology. Though DSRC enables select safety applications, C-V2X, or “cellular vehicle-to-everything”, provides a more flexible platform for V2X connectivity as we commercialize HAVs for personal and ride-sharing applications.

C-V2X is a technology with a clear and rapid path forward. This modern technology, which directly connects vehicles to everything, including each other (V2V), to pedestrians (V2P), to infrastructure (V2I), and to the network (V2N), progresses in a way consumers can see and are familiar with from their mobile phone service—from 3G, to LTE/4G, to the next iteration 5G.

C-V2X promises a host of technical benefits, including:

  • Direct communication over longer distances, providing vehicles and drivers with a bigger, more complete picture of the highway environment;
  • Improved Non-Line-of-Sight performance, allowing vehicles and drivers to “see” through obstructions and around corners;
  • Enhanced reliability, ensuring that critical safety messages reach their intended destination;
  • Higher capacity of data, allowing more and higher quality information to reach the driver and vehicle; and,
  • Superior congestion control in traffic jams and other scenarios in which there is a high volume of vehicles in the same proximity.

State and local departments of transportation may choose to deliver public safety messages to connected vehicles using commercial mobile networks. By leveraging these existing networks, states and localities can realize significant savings of public funds relative to more extensive build-outs of their own dedicated DSRC communications infrastructure (an expense that would ultimately be passed on to taxpayers).

There is no question that C-V2X has been gaining momentum. The 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), a relatively new but powerful global trade association of automotive, technology and telecommunications companies, has thrown its full support behind C-V2X. Since its inception in 2016, 5GAA has rapidly grown to over 90 members, many of which are conducting C-V2X trials and tests around the globe.

Proponents of both DSRC and C-V2X technologies have the same aim—to improve road traffic safety and provide time saving and convenience benefits to consumers. The realities of deployment feasibility, lower barriers to necessary infrastructure build-out, lower cost, and a clear technical pathway forward demonstrate the argument for allowing C-V2X in the 5.9GHz band so consumers can realize these advantages as soon as possible.

Neoway A590 5G+C-V2X Module

On May 7, 2021, at the Automotive Aftermarket Industry and Tuning Trade Fair held at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center, Neoway Technology expanded its %G series of products by officially releasing the 5G+C-V2X full-function automotive-grade module A590, aimed at helping the smart connected vehicle industry accelerate into the 5G era.

“With its advantages of large bandwidth and low latency, and with C-V2X’s PC5 direct communication technology, 5G technology can collaboratively implement rich smart driving scenarios such as V2V, V2I, V2P, and V2N, providing drivers with optimal smart mobility experience,” said Felix, vice president of Neoway Technology. “5G+C-V2X is not only the result of technological evolution, but also the trend of industrial development. Smart vehicles and smart roads will completely change mobility methods.”

The rapid development of 5G accelerates C-V2X deployment. At the same time, it raises higher requirements for product performance, communications stability and reliability, and size of cellular modules. Neoway Technology A590 has outstanding performance in all these aspects. For example, A590 is developed based on the Qualcomm automotive-grade chip SA515M. It is a true automotive-grade module that complies with IATF 16949 and ACE-Q100 standards, and can operate in the range of -40°C to +85°C.

While the A590 measures only 52×52mm, it has very powerful functions. It fully supports 5G, C-V2X, eCall, dual SIM dual active (DSDA), and multi-frequency multi-satellite GNSS. It can well meet the needs of products with high size requirements, such as shark fin smart antennas, as well as support a full range of positioning systems such as GPS and BDS. It can implement high-precision positioning by using RTK and QDR, regardless of whether in open spaces, or special scenarios such as tunnels and basements.

Neoway’s A590 supports simultaneous working of two cards and can keep the data services of two operators online at the same time. This reduces network coverage blind areas exponentially, guarantees the online rate, and improves the safety of smart driving. By using a unique bandwidth aggregation/balancing mechanism and link quality prediction algorithm, A590 can guarantee the data quality of high-priority services, implementing more stable wireless communications and safer driving experience. Moreover, A590 provides a seamless combination of software and hardware security solutions in aspects including startup security, system security, and communications security.

A590 can be used in a variety of smart connected vehicle scenarios, such as T-BOX, smart antenna, OBU, RSU, smart cockpit, and vehicle central control, providing strong support for safe driving of smart vehicles and even autonomous driving.
