How do you set Wi-Fi's flavors?

The IEEE's 802.11n standard was created to provide optional modes on top of required schemes, so vendors can provide different hardware configurations that attain distinct levels of performance. However, what's developing now are three Wi-Fi tiers all called draft 802.11n hardware, but without distinction.
