What is GPS?
Acronym for Global Positioning System. A series of 24 geosynchronous satellites that continuously transmit their position. Used in personal tracking, navigation and automatic vehicle location technologies. GPS was developed and is operated by the U.S. Department of Defense (U.S. DoD). Inherent errors implemented by the U.S. DoD create inaccuracies of more than 100m. Europe is building its own civilian-run positioning system, called Galileo. Its network of 30 satellites should be fully operational in 2010.
