Texas Instruments has unveiled a power line communication (PLC) modem platform that supports the G3, PRIME and IEEE-1901.2 standards across both CENELEC and FCC frequency bands.

PLC modem solutions provide the flexibility of a single hardware and software design that functions as a single global platform. These solutions cover both the end points and data concentrators in a PLC network, ensuring compatibility and easing network testing difficulties.

According to the company, its PLC modem performance has been proven by large scale field deployments in regions around the world where modern PLC networks utilise OFDM modulation techniques to increase data throughput rates and reliability in inherently noisy environments such as electric grids.

The latest TMDSPLCKITV4 kit will provide developers with a smaller low-cost design to evaluate any narrowband orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) PLC technology standard for use in a variety of industrial systems such as smart grid advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), solar energy installations, and building and factory automation systems.

The kit enables the creation of a single PLC project with support for different regions. In addition to supporting the previously mentioned communication standards, the modem kit will also work with TI's proprietary PLC-Lite software. PLC-Lite is a lower data rate PLC implementation of up to 21kb/s using OFDM modulation that supports point-to-point or point-to-multi-point communications, making it highly attractive in solar energy applications.

The kit is available at $499.
