DC-DC converters boast 94% efficiency in half, full-brick

Artesyn Embedded Technologies has released two families of isolated DC-DC converters for RF amplifiers used in micro and macro cell, NodeB/eNodeB, and remote radio head applications.

The AVE family boasts over 94 per cent efficiency and thermal performance in a half-brick format, measuring 61.0x57.9x12.7mm. An aluminium baseplate structure facilitates operation at ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to 85°C, and up to 100°C baseplate temperature—all without air cooling.

The first models in the AVE family offer a single 28Vdc output and either 450W at up to 16A current output, or 350W at 12.5A current output. The converters under this family cover a range of 60 per cent to 118 per cent of Vout and up to -50 per cent to 118 per cent of Vout. It has protection features such as input under voltage lockout, output over current protection, output over voltage protection, and over temperature protection.

Other AVE models include a dual-output model, which delivers up to 12A output current with 28V output voltage and 20A with 5.5V output voltage—widely adjustable from 4.5V to 12V—for powering digital circuitry. It offers higher than 92 per cent efficiency and the same excellent thermal performance as the rest of the AVE series.

The AGF family, meanwhile, comes in a standard 116.8 x 61 x 12.7mm full-brick format with the same aluminium baseplate structure. Billed as the company's highest power DC-DC module produced, it features power levels of 600W, 700W or 800W with up to 28.6A output current, and offers higher than 94 per cent typical efficiency.
