OmniVision Technologies has released its first 1.12µ CMOS image sensor in a compact 1/5" optical format form factor that promises to deliver exceptional still images and HD video to front- and rear-facing cameras in smartphones and tablets.

The PureCel OV5670 captures full resolution 5Mpx images and quad HD video at 30fps, and cropped 1080p HD or 720p HD at 60fps. It operates at temperatures that range between -30°C and 85°C.

The sensor achieves sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio claimed to be comparable to the industry's popular 1.75µ pixel when recording 720p HD video with binning. It uses approximately 35 per cent less power compared to the company's previous generation sensors during full resolution video recording. Additionally, its ultra low power mode further reduces power consumption, thus minimising battery drain.

The image sensor fits into a compact 6x6x3.5mm camera module, and is available in CSP and RW packages. It is currently in volume production.
