Global IC revenue on upward trend for 2014

Global chip sales growth picked up, with the three-month average hiking 11.4 per cent at $25.87 billion in February 2013, as reported by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) in reference to the data compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS).

The strong year-on-year jump may partly reflect that the Chinese New Year fell in February 2103 but not in February 2014. This suggests that annual growth may be moderate in March.

The February 2014 three-month averaged global sales were 1.5 per cent lower than the January 2014 total of $26.26 billion, which had been revised downwards from $26.28 billion. However the February sequential decline was less than normal seasonal trends.

Regionally sales in the Americas, up by 18.0 per cent compared to last Febuary, and Asia-Pacific region was up by 12.0 per cent. Europe showed 9.6 per cent annual growth. Sales in Japan, meanwhile, declined by 0.2 per cent.

Monthly data is given by the SIA as a three-month average, although the WSTS organisation tracks actual monthly data. The SIA and other regional semiconductor industry bodies opt to use averaged data because it smoothes the actual data that typically show troughs at the beginnings of quarters and peaks at the ends of quarters.

"The trend lines remain positive for the global semiconductor industry, which has followed record revenues in 2013 with an encouraging start to 2014," said Brian Toohey, president and CEO, Semiconductor Industry Association. "The Americas market continues to demonstrate impressive growth, while sales in Asia Pacific and Europe also increased substantially year-to-year, and the Japanese market continued its recent rebound."
