If Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 was all about quad-core hardware and large displays, this year the focus will be on even bigger displays, flexible/bendable screens and the connected lifestyle. MWC 2014 officially opens on Monday in Barcelona and along with it a deluge of new devices each boasting to be the next big thing in mobile.

MWC claims that more than 70,000 attended last year's event and 89 per cent of those are planning to come back for next week's show. The growing number of MWC participants is a reflection of the expanding ecosystem as the industry takes a deeper look into how mobile technology and innovation can go beyond simple consumer gadgets and transform everything from healthcare to automotive and even smart cities.

Smartphones to share MWC spotlight

The stars of MWC 2014 are most likely the new smartphones that will be launched by industry giants. A lot of anticipation is building up on Samsung's announcement of its "Unpacked 5" event, which strongly suggests the debut of the Galaxy S5. Fellow South Korean LG will bring its G Pro 2, while Nokia is likely to unveil its first Android smartphone. China's technology forerunners Lenovo, Huawei, and ZTE are expected to establish an even bigger presence at this year's MWC.

Handset vendors, however, must face the harsh truth that mobile operators are under constant pressure to identify more revenue streams, such as connecting their networks to things other than smartphones and tablets. Wearable devices and connected cars and the combination of commerce and mobile are the next growth opportunities that operators are considering.
