Kaneka adds muscle to OLED line through licensing deal
Kaneka Corp., a Japanese chemical manufacturing conglomerate, has signed an OLED technology license agreement with Universal Display Corp. in order to boost its presence in the phosphorescent OLED lighting sector.
Under the terms of the deal, Universal Display grants Kaneka license rights, under various patents owned or controlled by Universal Display, to manufacture and sell phosphorescent OLED lighting products.
Kaneka has been developing high luminous efficacy OLED panels with phosphorescent materials by combining with the company's own fluorescent OLED devices technology. The agreement will help accelerate development plans.
Kaneka said the company now plans to "aggressively explore" the new lighting opportunities offered by high luminous efficacy OLED panels in Japan, Europe and US in order to expand the company's OLED lighting business.
"We are pleased to enter into the next phase of our relationship with Kaneka as they build out their lighting portfolio using our proprietary highly energy efficient phosphorescent OLED technology and materials," said Steven V. Abramson, president and CEO of Universal Display. "As one of the world's leading chemical makers, we are encouraged that Kaneka is fostering the development of high performance solid-state OLED lighting."
