Altera Corporation announced partnerships with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AppliedMicro) this week to develop non-volatile programmable devices as well as data centre and optical transport network (OTN) solutions.

Using TSMC's 55nm embedded flash process technology, Altera aims to produce programmable devices that target a wide range of low-power, high-volume applications in a variety of markets, including automotive and industrial. Compared to prior generation embedded flash, TSMC's 55nm embedded flash delivers faster computing, increases gate density 10 times and shrinks flash and SRAM cell sizes by 70 per cent and 80 per cent respectively.

In a separate press release, Altera highlighted plans to couple its Stratix FPGAs with AppliedMicro's X-Gene server-on-chip offerings optimised for data centre and storage applications. The collaboration will include shared efforts on system solution definition, co-development of reference designs and supporting software development. The combined technologies will facilitate rapid adoption across enterprise networking platforms.

Altera is also looking to expand its OTN solution capabilities with the acquisition of Tpack, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AppliedMicro. Tpack utilises its SoftSilicon technology to provide mapping, multiplexing and cross-connection of packets over an OTN network. It has developed standard chipset solutions similar to ASSPs, yet targeting FPGAs. The acquisition bolsters Altera's portfolio with cost-optimised 20Gbit/s OTN mappers for Metro applications and 10 x 10Gbit/s OTN cross connect using partial reconfiguration for Packet-Optical Transport Systems.
