Vietnam has launched its first microchip—RISC SigmaK3—marking its entry in the microchip market.
This is according to a report from Viet Nam News, which stated that the 8bit chip was developed by researchers from the IC Design, Research and Education Centre (ICDREC) under the Ho Chi Minh City National University, with a budget of about $125,000, half of which came from the government.
ICDREC deputy director Ngo Duc Hoang disclosed that the the chip was built using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd's 0.25µ technology. The SigmaK3 is designed for handheld electronic devices such as TV remote controls or medical tools.
Experts see the microchip as proof of the country's ability to produce IP cores, signaling a new stage for its electronics production.
The ICDREC plans to market its products under the ICDREC trademark while doing further research on 16/32bit IP cores. The center targets to begin using 0.13µ technology to catch up with the latest trends in technology.
