Samsung SDI beefs up AMOLED production
A Samsung SDI Co. executive disclosed during a press conference that the company is planning to increase its capacity to produce AMOLEDs in a bid to meet demand for next-generation display screens for mobile devices, according to a report from Korea.net.
Kim Jae-wook, head of Samsung SDI's display business, told reporters that the company plans to increase its monthly 2-inch AMOLED production from the current 1.5 million units to 3 million in 2008 and 7.5 million in 2009.
Samsung SDI claims it is the world's first company to launch mass production of AMLOEDs. Kim added that the company has received orders which will cover about 90 percent of all the AMOLED products to be manufactured by the end of next year.
The South Korean company plans to use AMOLEDs for mobile devices including mobile handsets and MP3 digital music players. It expects the displays to appeal to customers due to improved features such as seamless and vivid images even at nighttime.
