TFT-LCD display maker SVA Group has announced plans to begin construction of a production line for thin-screen TV and PC monitor panels, aiming to be a regional supplier for the products.

"If we don't do this, we'll be left behind," said Jin Bo, a senior executive at SVA's TFT-LCD unit. SVA's entry into the TFT-LCD market is an attempt to catch up with South Korea-based Samsung Electronics Corp. and LG. Philips LCD Co. Ltd, Taiwan-based AU Optronics Corp., and Japan-based Sharp Corp. and NEC Corp. SVA's closest competitor in mainland China is BOE Technology Group.

Meanwhile, the company is boosting capacity at its first production line for computer monitor panels. Capacity at the line is forecast to reach 90,000 panels per month by end-2006, compared with its output in October 2005 of 52,000 units. The company last year disclosed that it plans to build a $6 billion TFT-LCD facility by 2010 in Shanghai, which would be financed by an IPO sometime in 2007.
