Xilinx new CPLDs with two I/O banks
Continuing its promise to provide high performance and low power devices, Xilinx Inc. recently announced two new members of its CoolRunner-II CPLD product family.
"When announced, the smaller CoolRunner-II devices did not support multiple I/O banks. We took them out to save cost on the products," stated Richard Terrill, Senior Manager for Xilinx's High Volume Products Marketing. "However, customers told us directly, 'we want this two I/O banks on your small devices.' These two products are our direct response to customers demanding it."
Known as CoolRunner-IIA and available in 32 and 64 macrocell densities, the XC2C32A and XC2C64A CPLDs incorporate an additional I/O bank to support voltage level translation and device interfacing.
"By adding that second I/O bank, we can support two I/O standards simultaneously that makes these devices ideal for interfacing between different systems or different portions within a system," Terrill explained.
Micro Lead Frame package
The XC2C32A and XC2C64A are housed in smaller footprint and lower cost packages. According to the company, the new Micro Lead Frame (MLF) chip scale package options reduce the devices' footprint at prices comparable to standard Quad-Flat-Pack (QFP) packages.
With the new packages, customers can now get the benefit of chip scale packages at a lower cost. The CoolRunner-IIA 32 macrocell CPLD is available in a 32-pin, 5-by-5mm MLF package with 21 I/O, while the 64 macrocell CoolRunner-IIA CPLD is available in a 48 pin, 7-by-7mm MLF package with 37 I/O.
Terrill stressed that the new MLF package brings "substantial cost savings to get a chip scale package and substantial area savings." However, he added, they did not sacrifice the characteristics that CoolRunner is known for.
"The critical thing about power is that its not one specific topic, it is actually many. And there's not going to be a single solution; there's actually going to be a lot of good engineering to be done by both ourselves and everyone else in the industry," Terrill said.
The 32 macrocell CPLD (XC2C32A-6VQ44C) is priced at 85 cents, while the 64 macrocell CPLD (XC2C64A-7VQ44C) is available for $1.20. Full software support for both is available in ISE6.3i.
